World Junior Championships, Flims, Switzerland

Juniorer Twenty top level junior curling teams from around the world are set to gather at the Waldhaus Arena in Flims, Switzerland this week to compete in the 2010 World Junior Curling Championships.

Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States will be represented in the junior men’s championship.

Teams from Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States will compete in the junior women’s event.

Curling fans will be able to view extensive live coverage from the event streamed onto the World Curling Federation website: www.worldcurling.org

Among the junior men’s competitors, Denmark returns to defend their 2009 gold medal title, with Mikkel Krause taking over as skip from Rasmus Stjerne who moves on from being eligible to play at junior level.

Norway will be looking to better a 5th place finish in 2009 with Steffen Mellemseter skipping this year. Artem Bolduzev, who played second for Russia last year, moves up to skip as does Ally Fraser, who played third for Scotland in 2009.

The junior women’s line up includes several athletes coming to Flims straight from the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver: Russian skip Anna Sidorova and team mates Ekaterina Galkina and Margarita Fomina, German skip Corinna Scholz and China’s Jinli Liu.

Other teams returning for another shot at the junior women’s championship title include: Alexandra Carlson and her team from the United States, Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg and Anna Kubeškova from the Czech Republic – who finished 5th, 6th and 7th respectively - in last year’s junior event in Vancouver.

The championships get underway at 09:00 (Local/CET) on Saturday 6th, with 3 round robin games per day through to Thursday 11th. The women’s playoffs take place on Friday 12th at 19:00 with the men’s being played on Saturday 13th at 12:00.

Semi finals will be staged on Saturday evening at 18:00. The Junior Women’s final and Bronze medal game are at 09:00 on Sunday 14th and the Junior Men’s final and Bronze will take place at 13:00.
